Buy me a coffeeIdentifying a true first edition is a tactical process of elimination. Start with the Number Line. On the copyright page, look for a sequence like '10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1'. If the '1' is present, it is often a first printing. If the line begins with '2', it is a second printing. Some publishers use letters like 'A' for first state.
Look for Points of Issue—specific errors or variations corrected weeks into the run. For example, the first state of *The Great Gatsby* has 'sick in tired' instead of 'sick antired' on page 205. True value lies in these artifacts of the first run. Always verify the price on the dust jacket flap; clipped prices often indicate a secondary state.
Condition is the multiplier of value. There is no middle ground between 'As Issued' and 'Worn'.
